Sometimes our mind and heart are at complete opposite ends of the spectrum…what should you do if this is happening to you? Let\’s take each piece and break down the importance of their role in our life:
Our mind is logical and is working constantly. It is the saying, doing, and thinking of our whole world…Many people reside to only listen to their minds (that\’s OK…remember, there are never right or wrong answers, as long as you recognize it in yourself) Are you one of those \’mindful\’ people? They analyze every situation; they come across and base their decisions on facts– it\’s right or wrong(not too many gray areas). Looking at this person from the outside: you might see them as \’cold\’, serious, and very much a perfectionist. Sound familiar?
The opposite can be said that many people only listen to their hearts. These individuals are often all over the place. They are sensitive, spontaneous(because they do things according to their ever-changing emotions/instant gratification), BUT can be very empathic. They see the glass is half-full (most of the time); however that can change instantly according to the words and actions of others. Could you say you are an \’all heart\’ person?
How can we meet in the middle of these two very important, but different parts of \’who we are\’ when making a decision? The question for you is: who do YOU want to show up? As with ANYTHING I\’m ever going to explain to you: you need to become aware of yourself. When you know yourself well enough, you begin to recognize along the way which part you want to shine the MOST in certain circumstances. Clearly- if you are in the middle of an exam, I hope your mind is working harder than your heart. If it\’s opening up with vulnerability/emotion- let your heart be your guide. Putting your pros and cons on paper will never hurt, in fact- I encourage it! The visual guide will help you! Now step back for a few minutes, think of different situations in your life, will you listen with more heart or more mind? They can work together, and the best part is as you learn more about yourself, decisions will be easier to make(practice makes perfect!) BUT be AWARE: that the results you choose today may influence your future– even if you can\’t see it now! That being said, are you basing this answer with only what is to satisfy your needs for today? How could this decision change your life in 1, 3 or 6 months with the decision you make today?
Did you know your heart usually works more closely with your gut…Use some logic, but if you\’re conflicted- as the old saying goes: follow your heart.
Oh, and a word of caution moving forward: depending on your past/current life circumstance sometimes our mind can be a critic– make sure you pay attention to the tear-down thoughts you tell yourself. Our (negative)mind can change the outcome with our perception of ourselves, interfering with our own happiness. Keep in your mind: you are a great person, you look good, and you will be successful! Don\’t let your harsh self-talk cloud your decision making abilities. Your heart wants it? But your mind tells you you\’re not enough…flip your mind to a positive thought(just try it) and move forward with your heart…Your life just might turn upside down and you\’ll find your best self on the other side!
